
General Poodle Information

Standard Poodles are a very intelligent breed of dog that thrive when they’re given proper care. They require regular exercise, training, and love. They’re classified as a large breed of dog, with the average female measuring 21”-23” at the highest point of the shoulder down to the ground, and males averaging 25”-26” at the shoulder. Poodles can weigh anywhere from 35lbs up to 85lb when fully grown. An average standard poodle weighs about 45-55 lbs.
Standard poodles were originally bred as water retrievers. Some are still bred for hunting companions today! As such, they hey are strong swimmers, and usually they love the water. In addition to loving water activities they love just about any high energy outdoor activity. They love almost any activity that they can do with their humans!
Standard poodles are one of the most diversified breeds. They have great desire and ability to learn, but also the calmness to sleep half the day if nothing is going on. They are not aggressive dogs, but some use them for an alert:) They can be intense one minute, and the next they act like a clown, keeping everyone laughing.
With their eagerness to please and devotion to people, the right standard poodle makes an amazing service dog. They also are fabulous at agility competition!
The standard poodle of today’s world is sometimes looked upon as an arrogant or prissy creature. Yes, these dogs are proud, but don’t be fooled by the portrayal of poodles as snooty. They are amazing dogs that are fiercely attached, loyal and incredibly affectionate, and they are always ready to take on a challenge.
Dogs are like humans in the fact that every dog is an individual. Some are more energetic, and some are more laid back. However, you’ll find that poodle pups are eager to please you as they become part of your family. Standard poodles are a great choice of companion pet for a wide range of families. For the active family, these dogs love to play fetch, swim, and take long walks! They are also great for the more leisurely family as well, because snuggling on the couch is one of their favorite things to do!
There is much more to be said about poodle history, for they have a fascinating past. They originated in Germany and now are the national dog of France. They are closely related to the Portuguese Water Dog. Their place in history is well-documented, but we do not have time to cover it all here:( Just know that when you join the family of poodle owners, you will be one of the best-loved people on earth!
