General Poodle Information
Standard Poodles are a very intelligent breed of dog that thrive when they’re given the right attention. The require proper exercise, training, and guidance. They’re classified as a large breed of dog, with the average female measuring 21”-23” at the highest point of the shoulder down to the ground, and males averaging 25”-26” at the shoulder. Poodles can weigh anywhere from 35lbs up to 85lb when fully grown. An average standard poodle weighs about 45-55 lbs.
Standards were originally bred as hunting retrievers. Poodles are still used hunting companions today! As such, they naturally love the water. They are strong swimmers and are always ready to go. They love the activity and busyness, but mostly they love anything that they can do with their people.
Standard poodles are one of the most diversified breeds. They have large intelligence and desire to learn, but also the calmness to sleep half the day if nothing is going on. They are not aggressive dogs but some use them for a watch dog! That is serious business, and yet the next minute they will be a clown and make everyone laugh.
Standard Poodles excel in therapy work. With their eagerness to please and devotion to people, the right standard poodle makes an amazing service dog. They also are fabulous at agility competition!
The standard poodle of today’s world is sometimes looked upon as an arrogant or prissy creature. That media portrayed image is patently untrue. Today’s poodles are as athletic as their ancestors! These dogs are proud, but don’t be fooled by the portrayal of snooty or arrogant poodles in the media. These amazing dogs are fiercely attached, loyal and incredibly affectionate, and are always ready to take on a challenge.
Dogs are like humans in the fact that every dog is an individual. Some are more energetic and some more laid back. However, you’ll find that our pups have are eager to learn how to please you as they become part of your family. There is a wide range of families that standard poodles are a great choice for a pet or companion. For the active family, these dogs love to play fetch, swim, and take long walks! They are also great for the laid back family too, because snuggling on the couch is their favorite thing to do!
Standard poodles are a very clean breed, totally non shedding, no drooling, and if their face is shaved, no wet, drippy mess after they get a drink. On that thought, it is also important to remember that the poodle is not fabulous for nothing. These dogs require regular grooming. The grooming may be done in a salon or at home, but either way it will be a requirement every 4-6 weeks.
There is much more to be said about poodle history, for they have a fascinating past having originated in Germany and now are the national dog of France. We do not have time to cover it all here, but I hope that you will join the family of poodle lovers. We might be the most loved people on earth!
